| Clients can remember events of any significance, as far back as their childhood, that may have been responsible for creating fears and/or phobias. It may be spiders, mice, closed spaces or public spaces or whatever. Sometimes the cause of the fears may be remembered consciously or the memories may be deeper than conscious memory and also formed in adult life. Even though the event may or may not have been particularly traumatic at the time, it is likely to have been caused by emotional conflict, anchored by a negative response.
Sometimes, when we are going through a learning phase of some sort, the inception of a phobia is the result of having an interruption that jolts us into a place of insecurity, and hence, feeling lack of control. This leads to uncertainty and mistrust of particular events., The beliefs and expectations about these events, whether real or imagined, can bring turmoil to those experiencing phobias. Phobias are built on the notion that these ‘events' will threaten our safety.
Differentiating Phobias from Anxieties
Of course, not all clients who meet with us have fears that are phobic. A phobia is an extreme reaction to a fear and you will know the difference if you break out into a cold sweat, tremble or scream each time you think about ‘your phobia' or a panic attack. Some clients just have anxieties that we can also help with, yet it is important to differentiate whether it is an anxiety or a phobia.
